4 February - World Read Aloud Day 2026 – A Day Full of Stories, Smiles & New Friends
February 2026
Wednesday 4 February, Bitou 10 Foundation proudly celebrated World Read Aloud Day (WRAD) alongside local schools, libraries, and literacy partners — and once again, it was a day to remember.
World Read Aloud Day, established by LitWorld and now celebrated in over 173 countries, highlights the power of reading aloud to strengthen literacy, confidence, and connection. This year’s South African story, “A New Friend”, was especially meaningful — shared in all 12 South African languages, including South African Sign Language (SASL), ensuring that every child could be included in the joy of storytelling.
Our incredible TIME Project tutors were right at the heart of the celebrations at Formosa Primary, Wittedrif Primêr, Kranshoek Primêr and The Crags Primêr.
Across the schools, the children were completely absorbed — wide eyes, big smiles, and plenty of laughter as they listened to the story unfold. Moments like these remind us just how powerfulreading aloud can be. It’s not only about learning to read, but about feeling seen, included, and excited about stories.
As Nal’ibali reminds us:“Literacy is not a luxury; it’s a right and a responsibility.”
At Bitou 10 Foundation, World Read Aloud Day is more than a single event. It’s part of our ongoing commitment to building a lasting culture of reading in our communities, one story at a time.
Thank you to everyone who made the day so special — and to the children who reminded us why this work matters.
