12 Years of Growing Young Readers!

March 2026

The Reading and English Project is celebrating its 12th year, and what a wonderful start to 2026 it has been at Kwanokuthula Primary School and Phakamisani Primary School!

Under the passionate leadership of Pippa Ford (B.Ed Cambridge), this project continues to focus on the all-important Foundation Phase, where children build the literacy skills that help them move from “Learning to Read” to “Reading to Learn.” These early years make all the difference — and it’s inspiring to see learners growing in confidence every week.

After 12 years, it is remarkable to think that two sets of the first learners who benefited from this project in the early days have now matriculated. That is the power of strong foundations, steady support, and long-term commitment. When a community invests consistently in young learners, the impact stretches far beyond the classroom — it shapes futures.

This year, the focus is on supporting all Grade 3 learners at Kwanokuthula Primary as they prepare for the important step into Grade 4. And the impact this term has already been fantastic:
  • 120 learners receiving weekly reading intervention
  • 170 learners enjoying access to the project library
  • 350 Grade 3 learners receiving literacy packs and stationery every two weeks

These literacy packs reinforce essential reading and writing skills through phonics, comprehension IMG 3351activities, and creative writing opportunities. Meanwhile, the project library continues to spark curiosity and imagination — and as research shows, when children choose books they love, their reading skills flourish even more.

None of this would be possible without the people who make it happen. A heartfelt thank you to our generous donors whose support keeps the programme running, and to our 25 wonderful volunteers who give their time each week to help learners grow in confidence and ability.

There’s nothing quite like the moment a child realises, “I can read this!” — and those moments are happening every week through this project.

Together, we are building readers, strengthening foundations, and creating a legacy that lasts for generations in Bitou.
